TWIN MAGAZINE GUEST EDIT X JULIA FRAKES | THREE QUICK QUESTIONS WITH KATE FOLEY
Be sure to hop over to Twin Magazine to read the first of my ongoing “Three Quick Questions with…” guest-edited series for the online component of Twin, the biannual London-based art, fashion, and feminism book. It was a thrill to kick off the series with Kate Foley, buyer for the incomparable retail mecca Opening Ceremony and beholder of both the keenest eye and most enviable job in the industry. While fashion followers may first recognize Kate by her effortless and oft-emulated street style, those who work within the field no doubt also associate Kate with her inspiring warmth and rallying work ethic, routinely regarded as ‘above and beyond the call of duty’ by the fun-loving, innovative and talented team helmed by pioneering retail game-changers, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim. I am certain that Kate’s nurturing of up-and-coming designers and contributions to today’s most innovative and sought-after collaborations will forever be applauded in fashion history. In the midst of this hectic Resort 2013 week, Kate and I grabbed a quick coffee and partook in a lighthearted little Q&A in the garden behind Saturdays Surf NYC, just around the corner from the Opening Ceremony Headquarters. Coupled with her resort buying duties this year, Kate is doubly abuzz in planning Opening Ceremony’s London boutique launch in time for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games and the final logistics underlying all the untold collaborations consonant with such a monumental OC opening. It was a true thrill to discover a bit about what makes Kate tick, whence her discerning buying prowess and inherent modesty comes (as it were, Brooklyn by way of an active adolescence amidst a picturesque little village in West Sussex, England), and just how the Bearbrick-collector would style a bespoke Diamond Jubilee Twin figurine of the Queen… exclusively in pieces available at Opening Ceremony, of course.

It was a thrill to catch up with my old pal, the talented Mr. William Yan, at the Oscar de la Renta resort show this week.
William and I first crossed paths back in ‘08 and I cannot tell you how proud I am—and how gratifying it is—to behold the blossoming of his now massive (and beyond well-deserved) cult following. He is a true gentleman with tremendous vision; I am certain that his fresh Brooklyn studio space and new portrait work are auspicious tokens of more forthcoming success!

It was such an unforeseen bonus to catch up with old friends at Patrick’s Chelsea studio: including my dearest Bip (we first met in summer 2009 on a LOVE Magazine shoot in London), my favorite fashionfolk Lynnie (who I have always held in the highest esteem, even before we struck a friendship when I was just seventeen) and my style icon Alice Lane (she first did my makeup at David Armstrong’s home for the Chloë Sevigny for Opening Ceremony book, Reds).
What a sparkly dream.

Under the umbrella of his Swell Communications Manager mantle, my love Johnny Misheff—who, among his many roles, also writes brilliantly for V, The New York Times and ELLE—sent me along a preview of videographer Barnaby Roper’s 3D production for China’s fashion institution MO&Co. Styled by benevolent virtuoso Keegan Singh (Streeters) and edited by my dear friend and fellow Pennsylvania native Nathan Brown (Boyce & Brown), Shu Pei (NEXT) and Liu Wen (Marilyn) dazzle in their spellbinding 11m 44s performance. The full-length 2D premiere will run exclusively on W Magazine’s website through next week, marking MO&Co’s initial entrée into the Western world.

Just let this marinate for a moment…
I sincerely hope that the profound message conveyed by the collective painstaking efforts of these creative geniuses is not immediately jeered or scoffed at by the oft-disparaging, flippant and narrow-minded mainstream media merely because of the esoteric—and admittedly slightly opaque—nature of the imagery being over their heads or frankly at a level with which they are uncomfortable or are otherwise too intolerable to perceive.
I cringe at the thought of the forthcoming panels of contributing “experts” offering their “colorful commentary” on the influx of American news and entertainment television programs—foreseeably amidst a loop of out-of-context B-roll and a token “family values” proponent (let’s not even delve into the inherent irony of that terminology)—rattling off some rash, inequitable and potentially injurious poppycock.
Somehow I can’t imagine Kathy Lee will be a fan.

Always the epitome of grace and wisdom, I miss her dearly and am so excited to hop to Cali this spring to visit my Frakes family (and to check in with the NEXT LA crew along with my dearest Left Coasters—namely Danny and David Roberts—with whom I am collaborating on several projects in the pipeline).

Check out one of my best friends Marc Sebastian Faiella pulling his finest ‘dignified-and-sensitive-chap-ever-so-casually-engrossed-in-a-ultra-esoteric-book’ lewk. Marc and I first met at a Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti show in 2008 or 2009, only to really hit it off a few months later at Café Grumpy (just before he won FIT’s Fusion Award). With sundry enviable internships and prominent design experiences already under his belt—and with buzzy press and modeling gigs to match—Marc now rules the roost at Parsons and Opening Ceremony Howard Street. Small world: He is also roomies with one of my other dear friends, Katie Fogarty (NEXT). Smaller world: My best friend/kindred spirit John Jannuzzi (Starworks/Textbook/To My Wife) just snatched up this very toggle coat.
